Table names of the elements are derived from various sources
including:

The ancient names of elements or substances taken for Greek and Latin

names of the scientists of first discovered the element

names of famous scientists, such as Curie and Einstein, in whose honor
the element was named

names of places where the element was first discovered such as
Californium and Germanium

names of planets, such as Uranium and Plutonium

Names
taken from the Latin words for numbers e.g. Ununseptium which is a
temporary name taken from Latin meaning one-one-seven

Some of the Periodic Table
names of the symbols of elements are derived
from their names in the Greek, Latin or German languages. Great if
you are multi-lingual but difficult if you are not! Knowing the
origins of the names the Element Symbols make them easier to learn
and understand. The elements with Greek of Latin names are the
oldest elements known and the element symbols were allocated
when these classic languages were those used by ancient
scholars. There are only 10 elements whose element symbol names are

Name from the Greek words 'anti' and 'monos' meaning "opposed to
solitude".
Cu - Name from the Latin word 'cyprium',
after the island of Cyprus.
Au - Name from the Latin word 'aurum'
meaning gold.
Fe - Name from the Latin word 'ferrum'
meaning iron.
Pb - Name from the Latin word 'plumbum'
meaning lead.
Hg -
Name from the Greek word
'hydrargyros' meaning 'water'
and 'silver'.
K - Name from the
Medieval Latin word 'kalium' meaning potash (pot
ashes).
Ag - Name from the Latin
word 'argentum' meaning silver.
Sn - Name from the Latin word 'stannum' meaning tin
W - Name from the German
word 'Wolfram'. Ancient alchemists called the metal "spuma
lupi," the Latin words for 'wolf foam' which was
translated to the word "wolframite" in allusion to the
objectionable scum or substance formed during the
smelting of tin ores containing tungsten.
